One of my absolute favorite December treats is Peppermint Ice Cream topped with homemade chocolate sauce. This recipe comes from my Great Grandmother Osborne. Our family has been making it for years… and for good reason. It’s easy, delicious, and you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry right now.
Grandma O’s Homemade Chocolate Sauce.
1 c. granulated sugar
1/4 c. cocoa powder
1 T. cornstarch
1/8 t. kosher salt
1 c. water
1 T. unsalted butter
1/4 t. vanilla extract
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, kosher salt and water until smooth.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly for 90 seconds as the sauce boils. It should become thick and glossy.
- Turn off heat, and stir in the butter and vanilla.
HOMEMAKER HINT – I usually store the sauce in a salad vinaigrette cruet. Good Seasonings makes a nice one you can purchase at most grocery stores.
